This coming Tuesday, June 13th the City's Department of Transportation (LADOT) is holding a community meeting in Glassell Park to present two of their alternative streetscape design plans for Atwater's section of Fletcher Drive. LADOT hopes to implement pedestrian/bicycle safety improvements to Fletcher Drive; between San Fernando Road and the 5 Interstate Freeway. Both plans include a "road diet" or vehicular traffic lane reduction.
LADOT has developed two alternative design schemes to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety on Flecther Drive. LADOT developed both plans without any community input. Also, their choice of meeting location and general outreach for the June 13th meeting has been geared toward Glassell Park and bicycle advocates.
Their failure to get input from Atwater Village, from both residents and businesses, is evident in their streetscape design plans. While containing necessary pedestrian improvements, it reduces much-needed traffic lanes that are is needed to accommodate a significant daily traffic flow. The plans include:
Alternative 1 – This includes an “off-peak lane configuration” in which vehicular traffic lanes would alternate from two to one throughout the day depending on “high-peak” or “low-peak” traffic flow. During “high-peak” two traffic lanes would be available for vehicle use while prohibiting all on-street parking. Alternatively, during “low-peak” only one traffic lane would be available for vehicle use and on-street parking will be allowed.
Alternative 2 - This includes a permanent traffic lane reduction from the current two lanes to one. It also includes a dedicated bike lane and on-street parking.
The Atwater Village community needs to weigh in on this important issue. LADOT developed these streetscape plans without the input of the community that intimately knows the ins and outs of Fletcher Drive.
Atwater Villagers has a choice; we can choose to go to a one-night meeting to advocate for our community or gripe in daily traffic congestion. What will you do?
